This magnetic needle rest is made out of ceramic from Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture, one of Japan's leading areas for creating traditional ceramic roof tiles (Kawara).
The origin of Awaji Kawara dates back to 1610, when the first Kawara roof tiles were made for Japanese castles. There are several types of Awaji Kawara, depending on how they are made, but include various types of ceramic tiles that have been glazed and fired. Each needle rest is unique and handcrafted.
The needle rest also comes with a needle polisher. To polish the needle, slowly insert the needle tip into the hole on the side and slowly pull the needle out while pushing up on the bottom of the needle rest. Polishing will create a smoother sewing experience.
